Administrative History | In Fordoun parish, Auchinblae Special Lighting District and Special Scavenging District were set up in 1895. The County Medical Officer of Health recommended a Special Water Supply District in 1894 and again in 1895, as some villagers did not have access to the excellent natural water supply. An enlarged water storage cistern was installed there in 1897, and the County Sanitary Inspector, in his annual report, said that a drainage system was 'absolutely necessary'. The situation in the village was still reported as bad in 1899 and 1902, and finally in 1903 both a Special Water Supply District and a Special Drainage District were set up, and sewerage works were carried out in 1904. The Special Water Supply District bought fire extinguishing equipment in 1911. The area suffered from water shortages throughout the First World War, and a new water source was sought. It was eventually supplemented from a spring on the farm of Newlands, and much improved, in 1920. The Special Lighting District's instalments were electrified in 1938, and the districts were all extended in 1946. The Special Scavenging District was one of those not dissolved in 1961 to make way for the new County refuse scheme. |
