| Description | Council meeting, 11 May 1821 [Sederunt given] The Council approved the report of the examiners of candidates for the office of assistant and successor to Mr Alexander Nicoll, one of the Ushers in the Grammar School. [Report engrossed, detailing the trial of the candidates.] The Council appointed Mr James Melvin, residing in Aberdeen, as assistant and successor to Mr Alexander Nicoll, as one of the Doctors or Ushers in the Grammar School; the other candidates were John Dun, residing in Aberdeen, Alexander Dunn from Kineswood, near Kinross, John Murdoch from the Parish of Forglen, Henry Carmichael from St Andrews, Monsieur Brement from Edinburgh and Robert Lindsay, residing in Aberdeen. The Council empowered the Master of Mortifications to pay to Mr James Melvin an annual salary of £27 6 shillings 8 pence from Dr Patrick Dunn's mortification, following the death or resignation of Mr Alexander Nicoll. The Council approved the recommendation of the committee to re-model the interior of the Cross in Castle Street as a shop, in order to provide a source of revenue and to contribute to the embellishment of the street. The cost of alterations, estimated at £350 by Mr John Smith, included the mason work already contracted to Mr James Small, mason. The Council empowered Mr Duthie, Dean of Guild, to execute a contract for £168 with Mr Small for the remaining mason work. (254v - 255r)
The Provost reported that the office bearers had attended a meeting of the Treasury creditors, in accordance with the Act of Council of 28 March 1821, at which meeting it was resolved to continue the Trust for seven years from 30 March 1821. (255r)
The Council approved the magistrates decision to superannuate Robert Cantley, one of the Town Sergeants, on his present salary, and to appoint in his place George Middleton, sometime baker in Aberdeen, but without a salary during the lifetime of Robert Cantley. (255r - 255v) |
