| Description | Council meeting, 16 June 1814 [Sederunt given] The Council perambulated the Inner Marches of the Town's Royalty, which they found perfectly distinct, and made the following observations: First, the Council remitted to the magistrates to notify the Police Commissioners that an opening had been made into the Bowl Road, opposite the ground belonging to the Flesher Incorporation, which interrupted the run of the stank to the bridge over the canal. Second, the Council remitted to the magistrates to notify the Police Commissioners that the bridge over the canal was broken in several places, and was dangerous to horse riders. Third, the Council remitted to the magistrates to notify the Police Commissioners that it would be advantageous to widen the road from the Canal Bridge into the Links by covering the ditch between the road and the ground belonging to the Hammermen Incorporation, and that, if the Hammermen Incorporation would meet the expense of widening the road, they might be given access to their ground directly from the road. Fourth, the Council remitted to the magistrates to notify the Police Commissioners that the Bowl Road was almost impassable and that improvements should be made in conjunction with the Flesher Incorporation. Fifth, the Council requested Andrew Forbes, shipmaster, to part with a small area of vacant ground in order to improve the road from Garvock's Wynd to the Pocra Road. Sixth, the Council recommended that Andrew Forbes should make a tract along the pavement in front of his houses to carry off dirty water, as the road was being damaged by dirty water being thrown from the houses. Seventh, the Council directed the Clerk to intimate to John Jamieson that the locked gate on the east side of his property at Cherryvale, at the entrance to the passage leading to the Denburn, constituted an encroachment, and to request him to remove the gate or to leave it open. Eighth, the Council directed the Clerk to intimate to Dr Dauney that the timber paling or railing he had erected on the line of the march at the entrance to the Burn of Broadford was an encroachment, and to remove it to provide free access, particularly for the Tacksman of the Town's Mills to clean out the mill lead. Ninth, the Council requested Mr John Smith to erect two new march stones on the east side of the Justice Mill Dam, and to erect two new stones on the west end of John Jamieson's garden at Cherryvale. The Council recommended to the Master of Kirk and Bridge Works to carry out the repairs to the Bridge of Dee and the Bridge of Don recommended in the report by Messrs Gibb and Smith, and to pay the expenses out of the Bridge Funds. [Report engrossed.] (33r - 33v)
The Council granted the application from Mrs Gordon, widow of the deceased Dr George Gordon, sometime one of the Ministers of the City, requesting that her son, Robert Gordon, be awarded George Cruickshank's bursary at the Grammar School, in place of his brother, who was in his last year at the School. The Council authorised the Master of Mortifications to pay to Robert Gordon £4 yearly for five years, with a payment of £20 on the expiry of the bursary, in accordance with the terms of the mortification. The Council authorised the Treasurer to borrow such sums of money necessary for the public purposes of the community, and to grant bonds to the lenders. (34r) |
