The Council appointed Mr John Cruickshank, Preacher of the Gospel, as assistant to Dr Robert Hamilton, Professor of Mathematics in Marischal College, and as successor to the office of Professor of Mathematics on Dr Hamilton's death or resignation. [Letters of application from Dr Hamilton and Mr Cruickshank engrossed.] Mr Cruickshank's appointment was recommended by the Faculty of Marischal College, and by Mr William Paul, Professor of Natural Philosophy in King's College; Mr J Tulloch, Professor of Mathematics in King's College; Professor Patrick Copland; and Dr Robert Hamilton. The Council stated they had no obligation to provide a salary for Mr Cruickshank, or to increase Dr Hamilton's salary. (126r - 128r)

The Council remitted to the Standing Committee to consider purchasing the lots of ground on the north side of Union Street, immediately south of the burying ground, on behalf of the Master of Kirk and Bridge Works, for the purpose of enlarging St Nicholas churchyard. (128r)

The Council remitted to Baillie Brown, Mr Hardie, the Chamberlain, and the Procurator Fiscal to determine whether the gate across the road leading from the Spittal Road to the Gallowhills, erected on property owned by the Tailor Trade, constituted an encroachment. The matter was raised by Mr Alexander Simpson. (128r - 128v)
