The Council approved the report of the examiners of candidates for the posts of Writing Master and Master of the Arithmetical and Mathematical School, made vacant by the resignation of Mr George Cruden. (The Council had decided to expand the Public Writing School and appoint two teachers instead of one.) [Report engrossed.] The Council appointed Mr William Findlay, schoolmaster at Fraserburgh, as Teacher of Arithmetic, Book-keeping, Geography and the practical branches of Mathematics; the other candidates were Messrs Robert Taylor, James Welsch, William Anson and Charles Michie. The Council also appointed Mr Francis Craigmile, student at Marischal College, as Teacher of Writing in the Public Writing School; the other candidates were Messrs Alexander Young, John Paton, John Cowie, Moses Birnie, William Anson and Charles Michie. (The Council's first choice was Mr John Paton, but he declined to accept the appointment without an increase in the school fees.) The new teachers were granted the fees and perquisites established in the Act of Council of 17 March 1800. [Conditions of appointment specified.] (159v - 161v)
