| Description | COUNCIL REGISTER, VOLUME 71, FOLIOS 208v - 213r Council meeting, 31 July 1827 [Sederunt given] The Provost reported on the sale by public roup of the Commonty of Whitemyres as divided into various lots by the arbiter, Mr Peter Farquharson, named by the feuars of the Town's Lands, having a servitude thereon by their charters. The Provost laid before the Council the list of the several purchasers: Lot 1 was taken by Alexander Allan, advocate, at £220. Lot 2 was taken by John Troup, in Backhill of Countesswells, at £150. Lot 3 was taken by Alexander Cromar, factor for the Weaver Mortification, at £160. Lot 4 was taken by Thomas Clark in Mill of Schivas at £130. Lot 5 was taken by James Cobban, slater in Gilcomston, at £120. Lot 6 was taken by George Garrow, Lind of Culter, at £150. Lot 7 was taken by Thomas Ligertwood, merchant in Aberdeen, at £201. Lots 8, 9 and 10 were taken by Mr Donaldson Rose, shipowner, at £210, £285 and £231 respectively. Lots 11, 12 and 13 were taken by Mr James Simpson, advocate in Aberdeen, at £120, £120 and £144 respectively. All which being considered the Council approved the division of the Commonty and subsequent sale. (208v - 209r) The Provost laid before the Council the report of the Sub-Committee named by the Standing Committee for the purpose of perambulating the ground on the Commonty of Whitemyres proposed to be converted into a dam or reservoir and inspecting the state of the water supply to the Town's Mills. [Report engrossed and signed by Alexander Brown, James Milne, Alexander Duncan, Robert Catto, Gavin Hadden and James Hadden] Which report being read the Council agreed with the recommendations contained therein and authorised advertisements to be placed in the Aberdeen Journal for contractors to build a reservoir or dam of about ten acres of surface along the Denburn upon the Commonty of Whitemyres, immediately north of the Lands of Angusfield, agreeable to the specifications to be made out by Mr John Smith, architect, the estimates to be lodged by 11 August 1827. The Council further remitted to the Standing Committee to meet with the various manufacturers interested in the proposed operation. (209r - 212r) The Council agreed to receive from Mr Hardie, the Chamberlain, a transference in favour of the Treasurer of Aberdeen, of his purchase of three lots of the Commonty of Whitemyres taken by Mr Simpson at the roup on his account, as detailed in the previous report, at £384. (212r) The Provost reported on the sale by public roup in way of feu of various lots of ground on the south side of Union Street and west of the Bridge, at 8 shillings per foot of front of yearly feu duty. One plot immediately west of the feu purchased by Mr Harvey Thomson was taken at the upset price by Mr Alexander Cadenhead, advocate in Aberdeen, on behalf of Mr William Carnegie, Town Clerk. The other plots immediately east of the ground belonging to Sir Alexander Bannerman had also been entered at 8 shillings per foot of front but no offer was entered. All which being considered the Council approved the proceedings and of the purchase by Mr Carnegie and authorised the Treasurer to grant a disposition in his favour. (212v - 213r) |
