| Description | COUNCIL REGISTER, VOLUME 71, FOLIOS 138r - 141v Council meeting, 21 April 1826 [Sederunt given] The Provost laid before the Council the report of the examiners of the candidates for the office of Rector of the Grammar School, the vacancy having arisen as a result of the death of Mr James Cromar [report engrossed]. The Council approved its recommendations and appointed Mr James Melvin, one of the School's Masters, to the said post over Mr William Harvie, teacher at Carmyle near Glasgow and Mr John Gardiner, schoolmaster at Neilston near Glasgow. The salary of £82 to be paid out of Dr Patrick Dun's mortification [act of election engrossed]. (138r - 141r) As a result of the abovementioned appointment, the Council resolved to advertise the vacant position of Usher or Under-Master at the Grammar School in the Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness newspapers, to be filled up by comparative trial at the convenience of the magistrates and the examiners under Dr Dun's mortification.
