Council meeting, 9 June 1826

The Provost laid before the Council a precept, dated 8 June 1826, from Alexander Dauney, Doctor of Laws, Sheriff Substitute of the County of Aberdeen, directing it to appoint a delegate to elect a Burgess to serve as Member of Parliament for the District of the Burghs of Aberdeen, Montrose, Brechin, Aberbrothwick and Inverbervie at the new Parliament at Westminster on 25 July 1826, the said commissioner to appear for the election at Aberbrothwick on 3 July 1826 . To which end the Council fixed 13 June 1826 and instructed George Turriff, Town Sergeant, to intimate this to the magistrates and members of Council. (147r - 148r)
The Provost laid before the Council the report of the examiners of the candidates for the post of Usher or Under-Master at the Grammar School, the vacancy having arisen as a result of the appointment of Mr James Melvin, one of the School's Masters to the office of Rector of the Grammar School [report engrossed]. The Council approved the report and upon consideration appointed Mr John Dun, private teacher in Aberdeen, to the said post, Mr Dun having claimed the privelege to which he is entitled on account of his name by Dr Patrick Dun's mortification. The salary of £27 6 shillings 8 pence to be paid out of Dr Patrick Dun's mortification [act of election engrossed]. (148v - 150v)
The Provost reported that in July 1821 the Trustees for the Creditors of the Treasury of Aberdeen had resolved that steps be taken for dividing the ground commonly called the Commonty or Marshes of Whitemyres upon which certain feuars claimed an interest as joint proprietors or as having a servitude thereon in virtue of their feu rights from the Town of Aberdeen. In consequence of this resolution, it was agreed to refer to Peter Farquharson, advocate in Aberdeen, as sole arbiter to determine what portion of the Common should be set apart to the Town. Accordingly a submission was entered into between the various parties for effecting the division and was now laid before Council [submission engrossed].The Council approved the proceedings on the part of the arbiter and empowered him to expose to public roup the whole of the said Common, including the Town's part. An application was laid before the Council from Mrs Janet Mitchell offering £25 yearly feu duty for a piece of ground lying on the west side of King Street, immediately south of the ground held by Alexander Russel Esq of Aden, including the site of the proposed lane behind the same ground and an angular piece of ground adjoining, [measurements given]. Which having been read out, the Council resolved to advertise the sale by public roup of the said ground at the aforementioned feu duty. (152r - 152v)
The Provost reported the sale by public roup of the leases for fourteen years of ground at Footdee currently occupied by Messrs Catto, Thomson & Company as rope and sail factories and Messrs Robert Gibbon & Sons as rope sheds along with other buildings lately held by Messrs Alexander and James Gibbon. James Gibbon & Company's lot was not bid for; Catto, Thomson & Company's two lots were taken by William Johnston, merchant, at £70; Robert Gibbon & Sons' lot was taken by William Maitland, merchant, on behalf of the Aberdeen Rope and Sail Manufactory at £35. All of which the Council approved. (152v - 153r)
