We acknowledge having received from you the sum of one pound Sterling being the amount of the stamp-duty and fee for the transfer, for which we are obliged. I am yours faithfully…”

“I hereby give and bequeath my whole free assets and estate moveable and heritable subject to the legacy aftermentioned to my brother John Otto Mcqueen and his wife Mary Abercromby Haldane or Macqueen, in life (?) and for the life (?) use of them and the survivor of them, and after the death of the survivor of them, and after the death of the survivor among such of their daughters as are then unmarried and in case there is no ensuing unmarried daughter, then among their children equally. I bequeath to my brother William Otto Macqueen a legacy of three hundred pounds and enjoin my Executor to pay this the first term of Whitsunday or Martinmas after my death. And I appoint the said John Otto Macqueen whom failing the said Mary Abercromby Macqueen, whom failing William Anderson Haldane, Apprentice Writer to the Signet Edinburgh, to by my sole Executor. And I provide that any benefit which may arise to the said Mary Abercromby Macqueen under these presents shall be at her own disposal during her life, and shall not fall under or be held as conveyed by her Marriage Contract. I subscribe this holograph will of the date above written this twentieth day of January eighteen hundred and eighty five. Jessie Macqueen. To my executors , I ask you to give any money which may be in bank at my death, either on deposit or current account, to be divided between the Foreign and Jewish Missions of the Church of Scotland.
