The front of the envelope is signed: “This envelope contains a notarially certified copy of a Statement titled ‘Statement of David Smith’s affairs at 12th October 1878’ and relative papers and is the property of Mrs. Agnes Connan or Smith, 12 Carden Place, Aberdeen; David Smith, 2 Carden Place, Aberdeen; Rev H.C. Smith Kirkliston; Miss Mary D. Smith, 12 Carden Place, Aberdeen as Trustees and is to be made forthcoming to them or the survivors of of them. Messrs. Macqueen & Knox, Advocates in Aberdeen, agents for the above mentioned Trustees, signed, 26th November 1909.”

Addressed to Messrs. Macqueen & Knox, Advocates, Bridge Street: “Dear Sirs, In accordance with the instructions in your letter of 8th inst., I have on behalf of leaders examined the property nos. 174, 175, 176 & 178 Skene Street West, Aberdeen; and I beg to report that in my opinion the present value of the subjects, burdened with a feu-duty of £11:17:4 per annum, is two thousand one hundred pounds, say £2100 sterling. I return herewith the rental that accompanied your letter of 8th inst., and I also return the keys of the vacant floors of the house no. 176. I am yours faithfully, William Kelly.”
