DescriptionLetter to Emma Barclay, Union Place, Aberdeen, from Mrs. Francis Farquharson (formerly Miss Forbes Gerard), Bombay, India, hoping that she has written to her, hoping that her mother is well, hoping for news of her brother as she has not heard anything for over a year, her voyage lasted three months and five days and she suffered for weeks from sea sickness, her husband Francis was kind, however, pleasant fellow passengers, Captain and officers, she has now recovered, gloomy season in India, monsoon rains, at present she feels it warm but old hands complain of the chilliness, the benefits of a fine evening, her resolution not to give in to the indolent and luxurious habits of the country, the temptations to abandon home life for the splendour of life in India, their own intention of returning, looking forward to hearing if Emma's school is succeeding, offering to recommend her to her sister in law Mrs. Black who has three small children they hope to send home for their health, their intention of moving to Surat, directions for posting and reminder that Emma has to pay inland postage on all letters to India, best wishes to all family and friends, 19 August 1823
