| Administrative History | York Street Nursery School opened in 1942 as one of the City's first war-time nurseries, for the children of women engaged in war work during World War Two. (The first war-time nursery was in the Castle Terrace in the old Maternity Hospital buildings, and further nurseries were planned for Linksfield Place, Torry, Hilton, Middlefield and Greyfriars - see Aberdeen Weekly Journal - 27 November 1941 and Aberdeen Press and Journal - 14 January 1942). It closed in 1995.
The first school on the site was established by John Davidson's Fund in 1820. This school was sold to the Aberdeen School board in 1879, and a new school was constructed on the site in the early 1880s, to a design by Arthur Clyne. It was then called Davidson's Public School, and was later renamed York Street School. York Street School was amalgamated with St Clement Street School in 1923; thereafter until 1939 the York Street premises were used by the St Clement Street Infant Department. |
