Administrative HistoryInverurie Public School was first built on the site now occupied by the Academy in 1902. The building was severely damaged by fire the following year, and rebuilt to the same design with four additional classrooms in 1904. The Public School was managed with Inverurie Market Place School, until they were separated in 1921. A new Higher Grade School was constructed next to the Public School in 1906, and opened as Inverurie Academy on the 6th March 1909. At that time the academy served as both a primary and a secondary school, with primary pupils accommodated in the Public School buildings and secondary pupils in the Higher Grade School. The primary department closed in August 1975.
Hutted classrooms and a central kitchen and dining hall were opened in 1948, and additional Art and Primary classrooms were added in 1957. A playing field was then obtained. A further extension to the building was completed in 1967, joining the two original buildings together. A new extension housing IT, Home Economics and the Library was added in the 1980s.
Inverurie Academy's catchment area at one time stretched from Donside to the outskirts of Aberdeen, but this has reduced with the constuction of Kemnay and Oldmeldrum Academies in the 1980s and 2002.
