| Administrative History | Old Machar Parochial Board had poorhouse in St Machar Place, now known as Fonthill Road [later Prince Charles Barracks site]
In 1895 the City Parish Council was formed to replace the St Nicholas Parochial Board (see CA/1/15), but its boundaries expanded beyond the limits of St Nicholas Parish to encompass area within the City municipal boundaries as defined in 1891: this included part of Old Machar parish. The new authority was known as the United Parish or the City of Aberdeen Parish Council (see CA/1/16). Under the agreement, the City Parish Council took over responsibility for all those whose settlement lay in the transferred area, and for the poorhouse in St Machar Place. The City Parish Council now had two poorhouses: the East Poorhouse in Nelson Street, and the West Poorhouse in Fonthill Road.
From 1895 to 1929, Old Machar Parish Council did not maintain a poorhouse, but had the right to two beds in one of the City Parish poorhouses. |
