Description | Minute book of Udny School Board, covering 1873 to 1916.
Includes a report on the situation in the parish when the school board was established, which records that there were 338 school age children in the parish of whom 284 attended different schools.
The schools which existed in the parish when the school board was established were recorded as;- 1. the old parish school, situated close to the parish church in Udny Green for 100 pupils with one teacher (reported as being a lunatic - Mr 'Udny' Bissett) and one assistant, Mr William Hunter, who actually does the work as the lunatic teacher has been for many years in the asylum. 2. a second school was about 30 yards from the school mentioned above and was a private female school for about 70 pupils. 3. a third school is the Udny Free Church School which was situated in the north end of the parish in Pitmedden village - it accommodated 'with difficulty' 90 pupils and it was reported that 127 scholars were in attendance, both male and female. The school had one certified principal male teacher, Mr Allan Salmond, two pupil teachers and the principal teacher's wife was responsible for teaching sewing and knitting. The school was about 1 and 3/4 miles from the Udny parish school. 4. Lastly in the south end of the parish is Balnakettle school, built on land belonging to the University of Aberdeen and a private school, although the teacher has received money from 'neighbouring proprietors'. The school was mixed and there were 34 children on the roll. 5. There was also an Episcopalian school in Whiterashes owned and provided for by Major Ramsay of Straloch. |
