TitleBanff Burgh: Charter of Confirmation and Novadamus by King James VI of Scotland to the Burgh of Banff
DescriptionConfirming previous rights granted by the Crown to the Burgh for the usual sum of 50 merks annually, and further granting the burgesses and freemen of the Burgh right to elect officials (e.g. Dean of Guild) necessary for governing the Burgh; power to sell merchandise and staple goods within the Burgh bounds; power to hold admit and receive crafts and trades (e.g. tailors) within the Burgh; power to build a tolbooth and a mercat cross in the Burgh, and hold bi-weekly markets as well as a common fair on the Feast Day of the Virgin Mary and a great fair with priviledge to hold an extended market once a year for a week starting on Saint Jerome's Day with power to impose and collect customs for these; and power to hold burgh courts necessary to administer law and justice in the Burgh.
