TitleStonehaven Burgh: Minute of Election of Baillies of Stonehaven
Description"At a General Meeting of the Feuars of Stonehaven held within the town hall the fifth day of October 1825, and called by a notice affixed upon the steeple door, by circular letters to the feuars, and by advertisement through the town, and at the churches of Dunnottar and Fetteresso, for the purpose of naming proper persons presented to the superior for election as Baillies for the ensung year. Present: Peter Christian, Writer, Stonehaven; James Officer, Corn Merchant there; John Brand, Writer there; William Strachan, Shoemaker there; William Bridgeford, Manufacturer there; James Tindal, Writer there; Robert Duncan, Lapidary there; James Troup, Gunsmith there; John Forbes, Mason there; James Smith, Weigher there; Robert Bower, Weaver there; John Lamb, Wright there; James Blair, Mariner; there; William Findlay, Farmer in Brucewells; Robert Falconer, Mariner, Stonehaven; William Milne, Farmer at Cowton; Robert Glegg, Farmer in Todstack; Arthur Stephen, Mariner, Stonehaven; Alexander Murray, Weigher there; William Melvil, Schoolmaster there; James Falconer, Mariner there; Alexander Morgan, Carter there; Alexander Burley, Tailor there; James Brown, Whitefisher there. The said Peter Christian was elected Preses and authorised to sign the minutes. The Preses stated the purpose of calling the present meeting and laid before those present the minute book of the proceedings of the Baillies and others in office during the last year, and also the treasurer's account book containing the state of the receipts and disbursements during that time, together with the letter book containing the correspondence relative to the town's affairs, for the information of all concerned; and after explaining the situation of the town's affairs, and the object to which the magistrates had directed their attention, and the progress made in accomplishing the measures in view, particularly the improvement of the harbour, he further stated that if any feuer wished for additional information on any point connected with the business of the town it would be immediately given. The meeting expressed its satisfaction with the information afforded, and with the proceedings of the magistrates and council, and resolved to proceed the business of the day, namely the making up and presenting a list of Feuars to the superiors for the election of two Baillies agreeably to the charter of the burgh. The meeting then unanimously resolved to present for that purpose the four folowing feuars viz: Peter Christian, Writer, Stonehaven; James Office, Corn Merchant there; William Strachan, Shoemaker there; and William Bridgeford, Manufacturer there. Extracted from the minutes by Mr. Tindal, Town Clerk. The Trustees of the late Viscount Keith approve of the continuance of Messrs Peter Christian and James Officer as Baillies of Stonehaven.
