Administrative HistoryStanding Joint Committees were composed of (1) county councillors, not exceeding seven in number, appointed by the County Council; (2) Commissioners of Supply, not exceeding seven in number, appointed by the Commissioners of Supply, along with (3) the Sheriff of the County. The approval of this body was required to all capital works, or works involving the raising of loans. Their decision was final. The Commissioners of Supply had very wide powers in relation to county government before the establishment of County Councils, but the principal powers were transferred to the County Council. The Standing Joint Committee acted as the Police Committee of the County under the Police Act of 1857, and it was accordingly the executive body for administration of the police in the County.
