DescriptionThe Promotions Board was constituted in terms of the Education Authority's Approved Scheme for the provision of a substitute for the Qualifying Examination (for the promotion of pupils to secondary schools). It consisted of representatives of Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Teachers and the Education Authority. From 11 Dec 1937 - 20 Apr 1949 it was known as the Board of Studies but resumed the name of Promotions Board from 25 June 1949 - 24 Jan 1963.

The subjects examined were: Neatness and penmanship, English (composition, spelling and diction, and a general paper which included grammar), History and Geography, Mental and Mechanical Arithmetic and Arithmetic.

The schools to which pupils were promoted in Kincardineshire were Mackie Academy, Banchory Central Higher Grade School and Laurencekirk Intermediate School. Other pupils from Kincardineshire were promoted to Montrose Academy, Aberdeen Central, Aberdeen Grammar, Aberdeen Girls High, Gordon's College and Queen's Cross R.C. Secondary Schools.

From 1 Sept 1933 to 15 August 1939 Day School Certificates (Lower) were awarded by the Promotions Board and from 15 June 1946 to 6 May 1964 Junior Secondary Certificates. The Minutes include lists of successful candidates.
