Administrative HistoryThe Poor Law statutes remained in force until 1948. The Local Government Act (Scotland) Act 1929 saw Public Assistance Departments of County Councils taking over the administration of the Poor Law from Parochial Councils in 1929/30 and continued up to 1948.

Public Assistance in Kincardineshire was overseen by the Public Health and Public Assistance Committee – minutes of this committee are included in the Committee Minute Book series KC/3/3-5 (the minutes for the Committee for 1930 are held at the NHS Grampian Archives, reference GRHB E3/2/1-2). Reports are included in the KCC minutes, series reference KC/3/1.

The Public Health and Public Assistance Committee decided to appoint local sub-committees to oversee poor law applications, the administration of Part 1 of the 1908 Children’s Act, the management of churchyards and burial grounds. The local sub-committees would cover five areas:

Upper Deeside: parishes of Banchory Ternan, Durris and Strachan, burgh of Banchory
Lower Deeside: parishes of Maryculter, Banchory Devenick, Nigg
Stonehaven: burgh of Stonehaven, parishes of Fetteresso, Dunnottar, Glenbervie and Kinneff
Laurencekirk: parishes of Fordoun, Fettercairn, Laurencekirk, Marykirk and Garvock
St Cyrus: burgh of Inverbervie, parishes of Arbuthnott, Bervie, Benholm, St Cyrus

Inspectors were appointed to each of the areas (typically these were Inspectors of the Poor for one of the parishes in the areas).
