The Council directed Mr Thomson, present Treasurer, to grant bonds for the following sums to be used towards the cost of building the new street to the town from the south, for payment on 20 June 1801 at five per cent interest: John Ross Esq of the Island of Grenada - £1,200 William Dingwall Esq of Brucklaw - £1,700 Rev Mr Tory, Treasurer to the Scots [space] - £1,000 Rev Mr James Reid, minister of Auchindoir - £300 Alexander Bisset in Mill of Inverramsay - £250 James Bisset in Mill of Inverramsay, in addition to £250 already due to him - £50 Robert Forbes of Parkhill - £120 James McLean of the Customs - £500 John Clark in Mill of Colliehill - £200 Mrs Margaret Stewart in Aberdeen - £120 Alexander Shand, Aberdeen, in addition to £1,060 already due to him - £30 George Bisset, Overseer at Leith Hall, in addition to £180 already due to him - £40 TOTAL - £5,510 (5r - 5v)
The Council empowered Mr McCombie, present Shoremaster, to grant bonds for the following sums, to be used for paying off debts: James Glennie in Mill of Lethenty, in addition to £370 already due to him - £260 James Glennie in Mill of Colliehill - £100 George Cruickshank in Balhagarty - £50 James Ronald in Mill of Pitcapel, in addition to £80 already due to him - £90 TOTAL - £500 (5v)
The Council granted warrant to the Treasurer to borrow the remaining £5,000 of the £15,000 required for laying out the south street. (6r) The Council granted the application from Mr Dun, Rector of the Grammar School, and Messrs Cromar, Duncan and Forbes, Doctors of the Grammar School, for liberty to exact increased quarterly fees of 7 shillings 6 pence from scholars, owing to the rise in the cost of living. Exceptions were those on bursaries, who were to pay no more than 5 shillings per quarter, and boys recommended by the magistrates to be taught free or at a reduced level of fees. (6r - 6v) The Council accepted the recommendation of the committee appointed on 17 March 1800 to consider the purchase of the warehouses at Pocra Pier used by Messrs Leys & Company in the whale fishing trade, and remitted to a committee of the magistrates, the Dean of Guild and the Treasurer, or any three of them, to arrange the purchase the houses at a reasonable price. (6v - 7r) The Council remitted to a committee of the magistrates, the Dean of Guild and the Treasurer, or any three of them, the petition from Messrs Alexander Brebner, William Forbes, George Tower & Company and George Davidson, proprietors of houses and grounds in the Shorelands, requesting repairs to the overflowing stanks or ditches in the Shorelands, and consideration of a plan and report on the necessary repairs drawn up by Mr Fletcher, civil engineer. (7r) The Council appointed John Dingwall Esq, merchant and present Provost of Aberdeen, to be their Commissioner to the General Convention of Royal Burghs to be held in Edinburgh on 8 July 1800. Also appointed Alexander Carnegie, Town Clerk, to be his Assessor. (7r - 7v)
The Council granted the petition of John McKenzie, vintner at the Block house and tenant of the Brick house there, requesting repairs to the Brick house, and empowered the Dean of Guild to arrange repair work to the value of £5, to be funded from the Guild Wine account. (7v) |
