The Council resolved to hold a comparative trial of applicants for the post of Usher or one of the Under Masters of the Grammar School, vacated by the death of Mr William Duncan, in terms of Sir Patrick Dun's Deed of Mortification to the Grammar School. (78v) The Council remitted to the magistrates to apply to the Lords of the Treasury or to the Commissioners of Excise in Edinburgh, or to both, for exemption of the £500 auction duty demanded from the Master of Mortifications for the sale of the Lands of Muchals, as the money was to be used for charitable purposes.
