| Description | Council meeting, 19 December 1812 [Sederunt given] The Council convened to elect a successor to the Rev Mr James Paull, Preacher in the College Church, as a result of his intention to vacate his charge in the course of three months hence. The Provost laid before Council a letter, dated 7 December 1812, from Mr George Glennie, Professor of Moral Philosophy in Marischal College, proposing himself as a candidate for the said office [letter engrossed]. Upon consideration, the Council resolved to appoint Mr Glennie to the said office for life. It was further stated that no salary or stipend could be demanded from the magistrates or Council. Instead Mr Glennie was granted full authority to let and draw the seat rents of the said Church as his property during his continuance in office. [Conditions of employment engrossed]. (247r - 248r)
The Council authorised the Treasurer to borrow at the ensuing term the sum of £300 from the Treasurer of the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen and to grant bond or bill for the same, payable on 20 December 1813, with interest of five percent. He was further empowered to borrow on the 20 December 1812 such sums of money necessary for the public purposes of the community. (248r) |
