| Description | Council meeting, 31 May 1817 [Sederunt given] The Council agreed to accept the resignation of Professor Patrick Copland from the office of Professor of Mathematics at Marischall College. [Letter of resignation engrossed.] The resignation was submitted by Dr Robert Hamilton, Professor of Natural Philosophy in Marischall College, who presumed that he would be appointed as Professor of Mathematics as he had discharged the duties of the office for thirty-four years. The Council appointed Dr Robert Hamilton to be Professor of Mathematics in Marischall College, in place of Professor Patrick Copland.
