Council meeting, 22 October 1824

Mr James Hadden qualified himself as a member of Council by swearing and signing the usual oaths. (80r)
The Council heard a petition from the Trustees of the deceased Robert Mackie, late skinner in Aberdeen, regarding ground on the north side of the Denburn, opposite the Hardwierd, between the road leading to Mid-Gilcomston on the east and David Shaw's bleachfield on the west, feued by the Council to John Jack, manufacturer at Gilcomston, in 1758 and after disponed to Robert Mackie in 1774 [history recited]. Having considered the petition and studied the writs produced, the Council appointed a charter to be subscribed in favour of the said Robert Mackie's Trustees upon the said two pieces of ground for the purposes specified in the trust disposition and containing a discharge of two feu duties purchased by Robert Mackie. The Council approved the sale by public roup in way of feu of two pieces of ground adjacent to the Church of Footdee, reserving a space of 100 feet east of the Churchyard for the purpose of adding to the burial ground should it prove necessary. The said lots were taken by George Yeats, advocate in Aberdeen, on behalf of James Forbes & Company, rope and sail makers, for the yearly feu duty of £32 per Scots acre. (81r - 81v)
The Council appointed the Dean of Guild's Assessors for the year Michaelmas 1824 to Michaelmas 1825: Baillie James Milne, Baillie John Young, Robert Duthie, late Dean of Guild, William Johnston, Robert Brown, Alexander Galen, Alexander Hadden, John Whyte, Robert Catto, Robert Walker, Andrew Duncan and William Leslie, all merchants in Aberdeen. The Provost reported to the Council that a change in the site proposed for the construction of a new jail to an area behind the Court House had been acceded to by the County and sanctioned at a meeting of the Heritors of the City of Aberdeen and Liberties thereof on 21 October in the Court House. He laid before them the extract minute of the said meeting which resolved to obtain a new Jail Act [extract engrossed giving resolutions for the change of site and for raising additional assessments for this purpose, and for affording further accomodation for the public records of both the City and the County, and for increasing the current Rogue Money assessment]. The heritors also suggested that as there were frequent problems in Union Street west of the Bridge and in adjacent streets because of the lack of a watch, it would be desirable to have that part of Town brought within the bounds and regulations of the Police Act. With this in mind, a committee was appointed by the said heritors to consider how best to include such a provision in the new Jail Act, the committee to comprise Provost Gavin Hadden, Mr Harry Lumsden, Bishop Skinner, Mr Francis Clerihew, Mr Hugh Fullerton, Mr John Chalmers and Collector Campbell, Provost Hadden to be Convener. All which being considered the Council approved of the proceedings of the magistrates in this matter. (80r - 83v)
