| Description | COUNCIL REGISTER, VOLUME 71, FOLIOS 120r - 122r Council meeting, 1 November 1825 [Sederunt given] Following the report of the Examinators of Competitors for Bursaries, the Council admitted the following to bursaries of four years duration at Marischal College; Charles Davidson, son of George Davidson, brewer at Devanha to one of Mr James Cargil's bursaries of £9; John Smith, son of Alexander Smith, merchant in Aberdeen and Burgess, to one of Catherine Rolland's bursaries of £9; George Moir, son of George Moir, carter in Aberdeen, to one of Sir Thomas Crombie's bursaries of £9; John Minto, son of William Minto, contractor in Alford, to one of Fraser's bursaries of £7; William Leslie, farmer, Turriff, to one of Ross's £6 bursaries; John Humphrey, son of William Humphrey, King Street, Aberdeen, to one of Turnerhall's bursaries of £5 11 shillings 1 pence; John Munro, son of the deceased George Munro, sometime planter in Jamaica, to one of Mr James Milne's bursaries of £5; William Galen, son of Mr Alexander Galen, merchant in Aberdeen, and William Balfour, son of William Balfour, Burgess in Aberdeen, each to one of Dr Duncan Liddel's bursaries of £5; George Leslie, son of William Leslie youngest, merchant in Aberdeen and Burgess, to one of Mr Robert Cummine's bursaries of £5. (120r - 120v) The Council appointed the Dean of Guild's Assessors for the year Michaelmas 1825 to Michaelmas 1826: Baillie John Young, Baillie Robert Brown, George Thomson, late Dean of Guild, Alexander Duncan, William Brown, Alexander Galen, William Johnston, Alexander Simpson, James Hadden junior, Robert Catto, Robert Duthie and John Maitland, all merchants in Aberdeen. (120v) The Council appointed the Taxers and Stent Masters for the year Martinmas 1825 to Martinmas 1826: Alexander Stewart and Alexander Duthie, two of the present Baillies; John White, Dean of Guild; George Thomson, late Dean of Guild; Alexander Duncan, late Treasurer; William Brown, Treasurer; Messrs William Lumsden, Alexander Galen, Robert Catto, William Mackie, William Pirie, Peter McFarlane, George Lyall, James Lamond, John Maitland, William Johnston, Alexander Simpson and William Allardice, all merchants; James Blaikie and Charles Chalmers, advocates; Deacons James Robb and David Carter, the two Trades councillors. The Council directed the Taxers and Stent Masters to raise the following sums: £526 10 shillings for the King's Subsidy; also in the sum of £2 3 shillings overspend upon the taxtions account for the previous year, including therein the Missive Dues and expenses incurred by the Commissioners to the Convention of Royal Burghs. (120v - 121r) The Provost laid before the Council a letter from Sir John Hay, Baronet, in name of the Trustees on the Turnpike Roads of the County of Peebles with copy petition and memorial relating to procuring a survey of a new line of road proposed to be formed between Carlisle and Edinburgh. The Council resolved to petition the Lords of the Treasury in favour of the measure proposed by the County of Peebles. (121r - 122r) |
