DescriptionCOUNCIL REGISTER, VOLUME 71, FOLIOS 6v - 7v
Council meeting, 3 December 1821
[Sederunt given]
The Provost reported that the clergy of Aberdeen had represented to the magistrates that the number of churches upon the establishment in the Parish of St Nicholas was insufficient in light of the increase in the City's population and that it would be necessary to erect one or more churches in order to increase the parochial charges within the Town. They recommended that the Town be divided into five parishes, each with its own church and Kirk Session. The magistrates proposed a new church as well as the Parish of St Nicholas being divided into five separate parishes. They further suggested that the College and Footdee Churches, of which the Council are patrons, be placed upon the establishment, along with the East and West Churches. The new church would be built upon the condition that the whole of the ordinary and quarterly door collections were paid to the Treasurer of the Poor's Hospital for allocation as hitherto done. It was also recommended that the various Kirk Sessions should meet together as a General Session in order that monies from collections and mortifications could be distributed. The Council approved the magistrates' plan and resolved to present a petition to the Presbytery of Aberdeen requesting their sanction. (6v - 7v)
