| Description | COUNCIL REGISTER, VOLUME 71, FOLIOS 141v - 144v Council meeting, 1 May 1826 [Sederunt given] The Provost reported on Mr James Melvin's admission to the office of Rector of the Grammar School and his swearing of the oath de fideli in terms of Dr Dun's mortification and the other regulations of the School. (141v - 142r) Mr James Grant, Collector of Taxation for the City of Aberdeen, presented to the Council his various vouchers for the past year which, on inspection, were found to be correct. The Provost also presented a letter from the said James Grant declaring himself pleased to accept £40 as compensation sustained by him through unavoidable arrears. Following this, James Grant, advocate in Aberdeen, was appointed to continue in the office of Collector of Taxation for the City of Aberdeen for the year 1826 to 1827 with an allowance of £50 for the expense of collecting and risk of bad debt. Sureties were offered by John Ramsay Esq of Barra and Francis Gordon Esq of Kincardine. (142r - 143v) The Provost reported to the Council the sale by public roup of the lease for three years from 26 May 1826 of the Town's Common Mills for the following yearly rents; the Flour Mill within the Town to George Henderson at £110; the Malt Mill to Robert Pratt at £105; the Upper Justice Mill to Robert Barron at £200; the Nether Justice Mill to James Eddie at £138. The Provost also reported the sale by public roup of the lease for three years of the Weigh House and Pack House Dues from 1 June 1826 to Alexander Paull at the yearly rent of £209. Which being considered, the Council approved the afore-mentioned sales. (143v - 144v) |
