| Description | The Education (Scotland) Act 1872 set up a system of education for the whole of Scotland, administered by the Scotch (later Scottish) Education Department (SED). School Boards had to return a variety of forms to the Department relating to the schools under their control, and the information recorded on the forms gives us a picture of how individual schools were run. 
 The series is arranged by school.
 
 The forms included in the series are:
 
 2	Annual Grants Preliminary Letter to Schools Applying for Aid
 3	Reply to application for a Building Grant
 7	Contains details of school room measurements; and building, furniture and fittings expense.
 VI.B	Details of tenure, condition of building, expenses and teachers.
 9b or IX.B	Contains attendance records, pupil numbers, bank and library details, income and expenditure tables, class details (size, instruction methods, grants for),teaching methods, building dimensions, teacher details including war service
 XII	Fixes Date of Inspection
 15	Details appointment of pupil teachers.
 XVa	No 2 Date of Inspection Charged
 15 D	Report on the progress of pupil teachers, gives instructions as to what course the pupil teachers should take in their training.
 16	Form of medical certificate for candidate or 2nd year pupil teacher
 17 A	Grant Schedule. (May contain a summary of the inspector's report)
 17A/15 	Grant schedule. Usually includes a summary of inspector's report. (Front page may appoint pupil teachers as 15 above)
 17C	Inspector's report on cookery classes.
 17D	Inspector's report on drawing and manual instruction classes and details of grant.
 17M, 18, 62	List of Merit Certificate Holders
 18	List of merit certificate holders.
 30	Certifies newly qualified teachers.
 32	Inspector's report, (general summary or on specific class)
 63	Special attendance schedule -	contains a list of scholars on whose account additional attendances are claimed
 64	Exception schedule - contains list of scholars absent from examinations and reason for absence

 68	Attendance record during an outbreak of infectious disease.
 91	Claim for grant form for blind and deaf-mute children, with lists of pupils.
