Description | The document concerns the payment required for the building of a chapel at Laurencekirk on land owned by Francis Garden. John Gibson, architect and undertaker in Montrose, had been employed by John Phaer, mason and housebuilder in Leith Walk. Their contract was verbal and on the understanding that Gibson and Phaer would have equal shares of the profit on the work. Gibson employed Thomas Jamieson Junior, a wright in Brechin, to perform the work, who had in turn bought the timber from Alexander Gardiner, a merchant in Montrose. £180 17s 4 1/2d was outstanding in payment to Gardiner. Gibson alleged both Lord Gardenston and John Phaer had to pay this sum to Gardiner and Jamieson. The document binds Gibson and his heirs or successors to the recovery of this money for those out of pocket. The document was witnessed by David Clark, servant to Charles Thomson the Town Clerk of Montrose, and Charles Thomson himself. The notary copy was produced by John Rose. Two other documents are included, both demands for payment from John Phaer: £70 to Thomas Jamieson Junior and £300 to Alexander Gardiner, both issued under the authority of Sir Francis Garden. |
