Description | Dispute concerns Peter Garden's administration of Dr John Scott's interests in Batavia, Dutch East Indies. Dr Scott was Physician to Baron van Imhoff, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, until Oct/Nov 1751, when he returned to Britain, leaving the management of his affairs to Garden. The summons mentions an obligation Peter Garden and Jacob Levier had entered into relating to 4000 rix dollars, which he had stipulated that, in the event of Flora Janse's marriage, 1000 rix dollars should be paid and seven slaves given to her (three men and four women). If Flora "demeans herself to the satisfaction of the said Trustees when married and still continue to take care of Elizabeth her child He desired that the child might not be taken from her and that she receive the Interest of the remaining 3000 rix dollars for the maintenance of the said Elizabeth". If contrary to that Elizabeth and the woman slave Biba who had acted as her maid should be taken from Flora. Dr Scott died in 1754 and his trustees appear to be trying to establish what has happened to his property in the Dutch East Indies. |
