The joint dedication by both artists is gratifying to me. It was done when Mr. Millais visited me in 1880, and was done in two sittings. It was mostly Reid's work, but Millais did some parts, the mouth, part of the brow & eye & a bit of the coat. He was much pleased with it himself, & said it was splendid colour. It is signed & dated by both.' His comments on a self-portrait by Alma Tadema: '£52 … I could not get him to do it for less. It is very like him. … he wrote me "I have already three times begun the thing afresh, and seem unable to satisfy myself."' His comments on a self-portrait by W.W. Onless: 'A good likeness, but not so successful as Barlow's. They say he is jumping to be President someday. We shall see!'. His comments on a self-portrait by Edward J. Paynter: 'Was formerly Art Director at the South Kensington Museum. Not a favourite with his colleagues. His wife aimed at fashionable life.' His comments on a painting by George Reid: 'Portrait of my wife, with background of clematis. As yet it is not a likeness & has not her elegant figure, but he has promised to take it up again. Up to now he had little feeling for looks in a woman - never kissed one in his life - poor devil! He has now got engaged to Miss Best he is close on 41 - she is 43. She is not bonny, but good, and will make a suitable wife.' January 1875 - 1879
