Calderon, Stopham Rectory, Pulborough, Sussex, sorry not to have replied sooner but was working on a portrait when the letter arrived, the young lady had come from Yorkshire to be painted, and had to go back for the grouse, description of the rectory and area, as well as the people, he took Alfred Tennyson round Petworth and marvelled at the Van Dycks, non-artists do not appreciate them the same way, he has not painted since their arrival, he has been relaxing and fishing, criticism of the sermon he had to sit through that morning, taking one of his boys to Rugby on the strength of a mathematical scholarship, on to North Wales to stay with John Aird, then work again, 26 August 1883
