Watson Nicol, 3, Edwardes Place, Kensington, West London, asking for Macdonald's help and offering Pettie's name as an introduction, he is to paint a picture of Highlanders taking an oath of allegiance and wants to make sure it is accurate, Pettie told him tha the Rev. Mr. Macdonald, a kinsman of Macdonald of Kepplestone, had a grandfather who was at the raising of the standard by Locheil, and that he would be able to help, he would like to know the manner of taking an oath on a dirk, the procedure if more than one are taking it at once, and whether or not the oath of allegiance administered by the Royalists at the time of Montrose would be taken on a dirk, 13 June 1880 [see DD391/13/22/2/1 for information]
