DescriptionLetter to Mrs. Alexander Macdonald of Kepplestone from Dr. John Brown, 23, Rutland Street, Edinburgh, thanking Macdonald for his generosity, he has had a letter from [?] Wilson at Lavender Sweep [Tom Taylor's house], he has heard good accounts of 'Dr. J.' but is alarmed at news of a sapphire, if it indicates an engagement ring, yet it would do him good, asking for news of Frank and his wife, receipt of a note from Mr. Rutherford, Mrs. John McLaren has lost her baby, Irvine Smith has just bought paintings from P. Chalmers, a girl and a landscape, both painted up the North Esk which has been flooding, hopes that George Reid's portrait will please him, asks if it is going to London, glad that Macdonald's pains have gone, reference to Hook, reference to sadness of Margaret's wedding, 'May she be happier than I fear', Mrs. Macdonald will always be a comfort to her and Macdonald will look after her financially, reference to 'young Effie and her Dragoon', hoping that they will visit Edinburgh soon, he has lost the octopus letter but if he finds it he will send it on, hopes that she is 'really better and stronger' though she will still be 'lingering and listening' for her son who has died, 10 March 1879
