Hook, R.A., at Miss Winters, Portsoy, thanking for letter and hamper, 'The folk here are civil & nice tho' they do crowd me a bit but this will go off "ai ai that's Westerfiel an that's Wullie's lum he's taen the auld boties nattral jist, ai it's awfu nattral …", 'Thank you very much for giving Allan a shove with his little picture', 'If you do not know Portsoy I'll give you a note of it: it is an old spot with a breakwater & three small piers, very fishy but on a small scale with about twenty boats and a good trade in barrels of herring & there is mostly a smack in the harbour lading marble from a quarry close by … the women have good figures but are not pretty. The brats are large & fine & look as if you could play football with them and not hurt them …'
