TitleMacqueen & Findlater: Letter from J. O. Macqueen to his mother [Jane]
Description‘My dear Mother,
I have Jessie’s letter with cheque for eighty pounds enclosed- I send a receipt herewith and am obliged by the loan.
The whole tone of Jessie’s letter whether through careless use of expression is such as to leave an unpleasant impression in my mind, because it indicates that there are grounds for blaming me for extravagance etc, and while I know it is otherwise.
I supposed you had a considerable sum of money in hand, what: between the £70 of Milligan’s money and the £50 each to Jessie and you from the Bank Salary and few, else I would not have asked for the money- I have invested £56: 8/6 in purchasing 9 shares of the Equitable Loan Company of Scotland who holds stock largely himself and is secretary of, considers perfectly safe. I explained that my object in doing so is to get the secretaryship.
In regard to summer quarters it is quite indispensable that I have lodgings somewhere out of town as I cannot leave Edinb[u]r[gh] during the summer- else I will not be fit for work doing seeing I am at present occupied with business 15 hours a day or as nearly as possible I will write as to other things in a post or two.
Yours Affectionately, J.O.M.
I send the envelope of Jessies letter to show that it has been opened by some and either before being sealed to or in the post office.’
