Administrative HistoryThe properties of Carnaveron, near Alford, and Cotbank of Hilton near Catterline, were owned by members of the Stewart family.
William Stewart (1791-1861), sheriff Clerk in Stonehaven, likely inherited them from his father, Rev. Patrick Stewart (d.1830), a minister of Kinneff, or his grandfather, James Stewart, who resided at Carnaveron.
On William's death the properties passed to John Stewart (1806-1863), a farmer near Stonehaven. On John's death they passed to their sister Marjory Stewart (1786-1872) who by that point resided in Jersey.
The properties then seems to have passed to Marjory's great-nephew, William Stewart, the grandson of her sister Anne Stewart b. 1788.
