TitleNiven/Cruickshank Archive: Papers of Mrs Barbara Niven or Leslie of Rothie and Kinbroon
DescriptionBarbara Niven or Leslie was the widow of Robert Leslie of Rothie and Kinbroon. She died in 1873 and many of the papers deal with her legacies and the winding up of her estate. There are also papers regarding the running of the estate after her husband's death in 1861.

She and Robert had lived in Kinbroon House until the death of his brother, George Leslie, in 1842 when Robert inherited Rothie and Badenscoth and they moved to Rothie House. After Robert's death she was left the house and lands at Kinbroon, Rothienorman. Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Forbes Leslie succeeded to the estates of Rothie and Badenscoth

She was born on 14 June 1796 and was married to Robert Leslie of Rothie on 21 November 1826. He died on 18 February 1861, aged 86 years, and she died on 22 May 1873 aged 77 years. She was buried in the Leslie family plot in Fyvie churchyard.

Robert and Barbara had no children and on her death she left Meadaple to her brother, Robert Niven, Bruckhills and his family, and also left legacies to her sister, Isabella Niven or Cruickshank and her family. The archive thus passed into the Niven and Cruickshank families. Her brother Robert predeceased her in 1867 and his son, also Robert Niven, inherited Meadaple
