TitleNiven/Cruickshank Archive: Notes concerning the Leslie and Niven families by Robert John Niven
DescriptionIncludes a copy of a newscutting concerning the return from South Africa of Reginald W H Crawford, prospective proprietor of the estates of Rothie and Badenscoth. Explains that upon the death of Robert Leslie in 1861 without issue the estates (except Meadaple) were entailed to Robert's cousin, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Forbes who assumed the name of Leslie upon his accession to the estates. Colonel Jonathan Forbes Leslie died 23 December 1877
Also a copy of an obituary from the Journal about Robert Leslie, which records 'he was among the last of a race of good old country gentlemen in the county. He was a most considerate landlord. When any of his farm leases expired he would go and look over the farms and say to the tenants what the rent was to be, without advice or assistance of anyone..... He enjoyed the family estates about nineteen years and the improvement made upon them by him and his two elder brothers, who preceeded him, can only be appreciated by those who know the properties.'
