DescriptionLetter from William Blyth, Edinburgh, to George Barclay, at George Cowie's, 31, Poultry, London, thanking him for his letters from Oxford and London, George's visit to William's family in Birmingham, wished he could have been there to show George 'more of the ingenuity and curious manufactures of the Toy Shop of Europe', hoping that London will not distract him from his studies, he is sending George's boxes as directed to London, insisting on interesting letters, dining with George's brother Charles at Elgin, meeting Mr. Berry at Falkirk by chance, his sense that Mrs. Berry is not much longer for this world, 'her complaint is a confirmd Dropsy and she is already very large', Emma has written her father to return quickly, death will be a relief, 'Mr. Berry I fear will Marry again', George Berry has been unfeeling and will probably be noisy in his grief, his mother has indulged him, hoping George's brother James Barclay will call on William on his way home, riding out each morning with Mary Hill, her galloway was intended for the Marchioness of Douglas, it does not seem to have the good effects her doctor intended, Mary is not decisive enough to provide good conversation, she neglects Emma strangely, the riding has led to rumours that he and Mary are engaged, news that Joe Cookworthy has set up practice on his own account with a brass plate, William's stay in Edinburgh is intended to be lengthy, 3 November 1812
