DescriptionLetter from William Blyth, Edinburgh, to George Barclay at George Cowie's, bookseller, Poultry, London, regarding a missing letter, the missing letter contained an account of Mrs. Berry's funeral, the first funeral William had attended, George and Walter Berry behaved well, Miss McKay has departed much in debt, and some time ago borrowed from William, Mr. Berry's house is now for sale but so far unsuccessfully, meeting with Mr. Peter, hoping to see George in the summer, plans to travel with the Berrys and with John Russell, his housemate, thanking him for his literary remarks, asking if he has met the authors of Rejected Addresses, envies George living in a bookshop, Mr. Berry had hoped George would join a society he used to attend, lectures by Mr. Nicol in Natural Philosophy, attended by many women, John Cookworthy is now at Edinburgh and seems superior to Joe, a Dr. Melford is now also visiting at the Berrys', Mr. Berry knew his father in Taunton, there is also a Dr. James Gregory from the West Indies whom they met at Pitcaithly, Mr. Berry's loss of a legacy by snubbing a rich relation, reviews in the Edinburgh Review, mostly of Scott's work, mention of Campbell and Hogg, discovery of Dryden, arrival of the Misses Douglas from Kelso, not his favourites, though he is distressed to learn that Ann Douglas' business is not doing well and she has been advised to seek a place as a lady's maid, news of Williamina Grant and the Ballantynes, asks if Miss Chater is as accomplished as Emma, Betsy Richmond sends her regards, travel plans, family news, 21 January 1813
