Administrative HistoryThe school, known as the Central School, was first opened on 8 May 1894 as a Public School, on Belmont Street/Schoolhill. It was open to scholars from other Aberdeen schools who had passed Standard IV. From 1904 it was a Higher Grade School and from 1920 a Secondary School.

In August 1939 the school buildings were requisitioned by the Public Health Authorities for the housing of the inmates of Oldmill Hospital, the latter having been requisitioned by the military authorities. The school then shared the Grammar School premises for 4 and a half years until Easter 1944.

From August 1954 it was renamed the Aberdeen Academy, also known as the Old Academy. New buildings were opened on 7 October 1970 by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in Groat's Road and the school became known as Hazlehead Academy.

The school buildings on Belmont Street are now the Academy Shopping Centre.
