Administrative HistoryThe school was originally founded in 1585.
In 1837/8 the school relocated to a new building on Institution Terrace, designed by William Robertson.

"There was a Grammar School in Banff before 1544, the Banff Academy established in 1786 at 9 Old Market Place. The 1837-8 building, also known as 'Wilson's Academy' was financed by money left by James Wilson, 'late of Banff, in the island of Grenada, a charitable fund for the good of Banff...expended on the school'." Historic Environment Scotland

The school became the responsibility of the Banff School Board in 1873, and was merged with the town's Free Church School. It was also known as the Banff Burgh School and Banff Burgh Public School.

The present school was constructed in 1966.
