Administrative HistoryThe name Ellon Academy was first used from 23 August 1948. Previous to this, the school was Ellon School, with a primary and secondary department. In October 1961 the Education Committee recorded that there should be an official opening ceremony for the new Primary Department at Ellon Academy, but no further information regarding the actual date of the move is noted. There is no reference in the Ellon Academy log book to the new primary department. No log books for the infant / primary department survive. In November 1970 Ellon Primary was officially a separate school from the Academy, and new headteachers were appointed - Mr Daniel Taylor from Port Errol School became the new Primary Headteacher, and Mr Eric Slater the Academy's rector.

An extension to the Academy was opened in 1967.

The school moved to a new Ellon Academy Community Campus on Kellie Pearl Way in 2016.
