Administrative History | The school is named after John Mathers who, in 1809, left £100 sterling “for the education and clothing of twenty poor fishermen’s sons of Newburgh”. With the coming of state education, the legacy was passed on to the school on condition that the name of John Mathers be remembered.
The school was originally built in 1838 and located at 15 Main Street, Newburgh, but this building was converted into the Holyrood Chapel in c.1882. |
