| Administrative History | W.R. Fraser's 'History of the parish and burgh of Laurencekirk' (1880) includes chapters on schoolmasters (XXXV) and village teachers (XXXVI).
Laurencekirk Public School gained the entitlement to deliver secondary education in 1895. It was renamed Laurencekirk Junior Secondary School in 1939, and was granted Senior Secondary status in 1974. It was renamed Mearns Academy in 1977. The primary department moved to a new building in 1999, and Mearns Academy moved into a new building in 2014.
