Description | Copy of a petition from the council of Old Aberdeen to the Privy Council of Scotland, stating that the nomination and appointing of bailies to the town council was once the remit of the bishops of Aberdeen, but that this was removed with the abolishment of episcopacy [in 1690]. On 24 March 1690 the lords of the Privy Council nominated and appointed the bailies. The town council now petitions the Privy Council that this needs to be done again for the upcoming year. The town council makes recommendation of particular individuals well disposed towards the present government, or alternatively is prepared to handle the election process themselves if the Privy Council wishes it.
