| Administrative History | Fyvie School Board covered the area of Fyvie civil parish in north west Aberdeenshire. A survey of all the children in the area just after the Board was set up showed that there were 692 children of school age of whom 559 were attending schools either in or outside the parish. There was considered to be insufficient accommodation for the other 133 in the existing schools, which were the Parochial School (to be limited to boys as there was a female school nearby); Mrs. Gordon's Female School (this was discontinued at the death of Mrs. Gordon's husband, Cosmo Gordon, in 1880, but was reopened the following year by Alexander Gordon); new schools at Steinmanhill and Woodhead; Meiklefolla, an Episcopal school to be transferred to the Board; St. Katherine's School at Cromblet which was not to be taken over, and Barthol Chapel in Tarves which several Fyvie children attended.
The Education (Scotland) Act 1872 (35 & 36 Vict., c.62) created school boards in Scotland with a statutory duty to provide education for all children between the ages of 5 and 13. The boards had an elected membership made up of owners and occupiers of property of the value of £4 or over. They were responsible for the building and maintenance of schools, staffing and attendance of pupils. They were overseen by the Scotch Board of Education.
The Education (Scotland) Act 1901 (64 Vict. and 1 Edw. VII, c.9) raised the school leaving age to 14. School boards were abolished by the Education (Scotland) Act 1918 (8 & 9 Geo. V, c.48) and replaced by education authorities and school management committees. |
