Administrative HistoryEstablished by Will and Testament of James Wilson, Island of Grenada, dated 2 July 1799. On death of last beneficiary of will in 1835, funds were remitted to the magistrates of the Burgh of Banff to be used as a charitable fund. Banff Town Council moved to use the fund for educational purposes on 5 December 1835. Wilson's Institution, incorporating Grammar School, Madras School, Infant School and museum belonging to the Banff Institution for Science, opened 1838. Buildings were transferred to School Board following Education (Scotland) Act, 1872, reserving the portion of the buildings used as a museum, which was conveyed to the School Board in 1902. After 1872, the funds were allocated to the use of the Banff Dispensary and to individuals.
